Overview of Process
If your client is getting a State ID card for the first time, or if their ID card expired, your client will need:
1. $10 unless they are eligible to have the fee waived.
2. Original documents that prove:
- Identity (who they are)
- That they are a U.S. Citizen or here legally
- That they live in Michigan
- That they have a social security number or are not eligible for one
The secretary of state publishes of a list of the types of proof that it prefers for each of these factors. You should try to get the documents listed on the SOS list first. If you have any problems, keep track of your efforts on the Record of Efforts form. If you can't get these forms, this website will give you ideas about what other kinds of proof might be accepted.
Here are some suggestions for 3 specific situations:
My client has not had a valid Michigan ID in the past 4 years.
My client lost a Michigan ID card that should still be valid.
My client was recently released from prison.
Even if you don't have all the documents you need to get a State ID card, you may still be able to get a job or to get help from the Department of Human Services because these situation do not require all the same kinds of documents as the Secretary of State.
